Home alone boy, 5, found out in storm

A mother put her five-year-old son in danger when she left him home alone a court was told.

The little boy was seen in the street at Blackpool running across a road one morning wearing inappropriate clothing during a storm.

The 43-year-year old parent, from Blackpool, who can not be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to neglecting a child in a manner likely to cause him unnecessary suffering or injury to health.

Andrea Fawcett, prosecuting, said the boy was seen running in a Blackpool street, on December 30 last year about 9.30am.

The prosecutor added: “It was appalling weather with heavy rain and strong winds. He was inappropriately dressed. He had been crying.”

The boy, who was wearing only one shoe and no socks, ran across the road to a shop. He was taken home from there.

The prosecutor said: “When questioned, the mother said she had left him at home while she popped out to get some items. She said she had done it before.”

Defence lawyer, David Charnley, asked for reports to be prepared on his client.

The mother was bailed for pre-sentence reports by Blackpool magistrates. She must not have any contact with any child under 16 unless assessed and approved by Social Services
