Premier Inn is poised to submit a planning application to build an additional 26 bedrooms at its hotel attached to the Red Lion on Devonshire Road in Bispham.

Currently there are around 60 rooms.

A spokesman for Premier Inn said: “The reason for the expansion is because the hotel is trading very well and consistently has above-average occupancy rates.

“As a result, Premier Inn wants to add additional rooms, 26 new bedrooms, to meet the demand.”

If the scheme gets the go-ahead, the hotel would remain open during construction.

The spokesman added: “The building works would be carefully planned in terms of phasing so that they would cause minimum inconvenience to guests and neighbours.

Working hours will also be set by the planning permission and standard council regulations in that respect.”

There is no exact figure for the level of investment but the company confirmed it would be “a multi-million pound capital investment”.

Last year Premier Inn also secured planning permission to build a 150-bedroom hotel on the vacant Yates’s site in Talbot Square.

Work was expected to begin this spring after councillors approved a £7m six-storey scheme which also includes a Brewers Fayre restaurant on the ground floor.

Tourism figures released by the council last month showed more people are staying overnight in Blackpool.

The latest official survey, for the first four months of the year, shows more than two million adults visited Blackpool between January and April.

While the overall total of visits is roughly in line with 2015, more than half of visits included an overnight stay, up from 36 per cent last year and the highest proportion of overnight stays since 2011.

Visitor satisfaction ratings with the resort increased too, with 87 per cent of visitors saying they enjoyed their stay in the town – up from 79 per cent over the same period last year.

The figures are from the UK-wide Omnibus survey based on thousands of household interviews and only count adults.
