Emergency services were called to reports of an explosion in Yorkshire Street, Blackpool, at 8pm last night (Wednesday).
Engineers who had been carrying out cabling work in the carriageway heard a loud bang and saw flames coming from the excavated area.
Police, fire service and paramedics were called, but nobody was injured, and the scene was made safe while Electricity North West crews isolated the problem.
