A Lytham man will be dressing as Blackpool Tower this weekend when he takes part in the London Marathon.

Tony Howarth, 65, who is a HR manager for BP and also commutes to London, decided to challenge himself even further by donning a costume.

Ready for round two, having just completed the Manchester Marathon, he will be running his socks off this Sunday to raisde much needed funds for the Samaritans charity. He said: “My motivation for running is to support a cause close to my heart - the Samaritans, the primary charity for the London Marathon.

“Having completed the London Marathon six times before, this year holds special significance for me.

“To amplify awareness for both Blackpool and the Samaritans, I'll be donning a distinctive rubber Blackpool Tower outfit during the race.

“Over the years, l've raised over £50,000 for various charities, and now, more than ever, the Samaritans need our support.”

Tony has also taken part in many virtual runs during lockdown, donning over 12 different costumes such as a French and a Greek man and even a rhino!

Due to start at 10am, the 26.2-mile race around the streets of London will begin south of the Thames at Blackheath passing through Greenwich before crossing the river over Tower Bridge.

It then continues through central London before finishing in glory in front of Buckingham Palace.

Tony added: “I have ran the London Marathon for the past six years and said to myself, what can I do differently this year?

“This is the first time I have dressed up.

“It’s going to be difficult but it’s for such a great cause, so why not!”
