Ladies' taking to mud to help mum Sam

The idea of running six kilometres in watery mud while trying to navigate a series of tricky obstacles may not be everyone's idea of fun.

But some 24 Fleetwood women are preparing to do just that in a few months’ time – and it’s all for a good cause.

Fitness instructor Maxine Garrett and members of her class are trying to raise £1,000 for Fleetwood mum of-four Sam Frith, of Heathfield Road, who is now terminally ill after developing breast cancer two years ago.

Sam, who is just 32 years old, has children aged two, seven, nine and 11, and the aim is to raise cash which can provide some special treats for the family at such a difficult time.

Maxine and her class members have signed up for the challenging Muddy Manics event, which takes place at Burrs Park in Bury on April 24.

The group, who will all be travelling to Bury on a coach for the big day, have set up a Just Giving account to help them raise funds.

Mum-of-two Maxine, 37, of Broadway, Fleetwood, said: “As a mum myself Sam’s situation really strikes a chord with me and this is at least something we can do to help the family.

“They are going through a really tough time so we just wanted to help.

“We all enjoy a challenge and last year some of us took part in the Tough Mudder event, which raises money for Help For Heroes.

“This time we were able to choose our own good cause and we thought of Sam.”

Maxine runs the Maxi Fitness metafit sessions at St Nicholas Church Hall on Tuesday evenings, followed by her abs blast sessions.

She also runs metafit sessions, followed by kettlebells classes, at Trinity Methodist church hall on Fleetwood Road, every Wednesday evening.

The Muddy Maniacs event include two laps, 30 obstacles and a great deal of mud and water.

The course devisers describe it as being “mentally and physically challenging” and entrants are advised to tackle it in teams, so they can help each other out.

Student Maxine is currently studying for a sports coach and exercise instructors degree at Blackpool and The Fylde College.
