Lewis Mather, 16, was given a special certificate and had his prom fees paid by staff at Highfield Academy on Highfield Road, South Shore, in recognition of his achievement.

He said: “They put all the 100 per cent attendance names up in assembly and my name was in red, so I knew there was something going on.

“I’ve never really felt like I shouldn’t be in school, though there were hard days like if there was a big test or a lot of revision going on.

“I enjoy it most of the time.”

Lewis, of Woodstock Gardens, is going on to study Maths, Physics and Chemistry at Blackpool Sixth Form College this autumn.

He hopes to go into a career where he can make the most of his love of science.

He said: “I think I’ll get the best marks in chemistry; that one was the easiest out of all of them.

“I have no idea what I want to do but it’s doing to be something to do with science.

“I think my parents are proud. My older brother might be a bit jealous because he only got full attendence for 10 years out of 12, but I think he’ll secretly be proud too.”

Delighted mum Alison said: “I think never missing a day has benefited Lewis.

“He’s definitely one of the clever ones. He always said it was him and one other girl in his class fighting for the top spots.

“Through high school he has always taken himself and made sure he got their on time. He’s just that kind of person who wants to do his best.

“Like any kid I’m sure he would rather be at home but he knows his education is important and he just gets on with it. The only subject he doesn’t really like is PE!”

More than 1,300 other Blackpool pupils who achieved 100 per cent school attendance for the year will celebrate their efforts with radio presenter Ged Mills at Blackpool Football Club next week.

Coun Graham Cain, Blackpool Council’s cabinet secretary said: “Getting children to school is so vitally important.

“Every day that they go to school, they learn at a quicker rate and have better exam results, which in turn give them a much better chance in life.

“There are some fantastic pupils in Blackpool and I’m really keen that we celebrate them as much as possible and show them off as an example for others to strive for.

“All the children attending the events have worked very hard throughout the year and they all deserve to celebrate their efforts.

“They should be very proud of themselves.”
