Library axe protest group vows to battle on

Campaigners who battled unsuccessfully to restore Lytham's library to its traditional home have vowed to fight on.

The Friends of Lytham Institute are now turning their attention to making sure the Institute building in Clifton Street, which housed the library for more than a century up to its closure almost two years ago, is kept for use by the community.

Despite determined lobbying by the Friends, Lancashire County Council decided last month to rehouse the library in the town’s Assembly Rooms (inset), while the future of the Grade II-listed Institute, owned by Fylde Council, is still to be decided.

The Friends are holding a public meeting in the Hewitt Rooms on Tuesday at 7pm to discuss their next move. Chairman Chris Marshall said: “I hope people who have campaigned so brilliantly to restore the library to the Institute will not give up hope and will attend to show what this historic building means to the people of Lytham and that they want it retained for its original purpose – the education and leisure of the people of Lytham.”
