Library axe protest group vows to battle on
The Friends of Lytham Institute are now turning their attention to making sure the Institute building in Clifton Street, which housed the library for more than a century up to its closure almost two years ago, is kept for use by the community.
Despite determined lobbying by the Friends, Lancashire County Council decided last month to rehouse the library in the town’s Assembly Rooms (inset), while the future of the Grade II-listed Institute, owned by Fylde Council, is still to be decided.

Chairman Chris Marshall said: “I hope people who have campaigned so brilliantly to restore the library to the Institute will not give up hope and will attend to show what this historic building means to the people of Lytham and that they want it retained for its original purpose – the education and leisure of the people of Lytham.”
