Lytham St Annes Lions are extending the age range of health screenings being held locally next month.
The sessions at Lytham St Annes Technology and performing Arts College on may 9 and 10 are being held by CRY (Cardiac Risk In the Young), funded by the cash raised at the Lions’ latest annual swimarathon in January.
The Lions’ initial aim was to raise enough to pay for screenings for 14-18 year olds and of 200 spaces available, around 150 have been taken up by that age group.
Now, the Lions, keen to fill every space, are offering people aged from 19 to 35 – the upper end of CRY’s regular age range – the opportunity to attend the event.
The sessions over the weekend of May 9 and 10 will assess the cardiac health of 200 young people aged between 14 and 18 and are being funded by the £8,000 raised at the Lions’ swimarathon event held in St Annes in January.
The Lions, who have raised tens of thousands of pounds for a variety of good causes over 29 years of the swimarathon, are keen to prevent tragedies such as the sudden death five years ago of Luke Rutter, a St Annes student who collapsed on a tennis court with heart problems.
The choice of the CRY screenings as the beneficiary this year followed the raising of enough cash to install life-saving defibrillators in all local schools over the last two years.
Lions spokesman Colin Holt said: “We are very much looking forward to the screening sessions and with just over a week to go, thought it appropriate to extended the age range to make sure as many places as possible are taken up.
“CRY’s mission is to identify those at risk from sudden cardiac death .
“We were absolutely delighted to support the charity after raising the cash to fund defibrillators for schools across Fylde over the previous two years.”
