MP wants answers on EU students

Labour MP for Blackpool South, Gordon Marsden, has asked the government for its projected numbers of EU students in receipt of student loans likely to be studying in England in 2020, 2030, and 2040.

Mr Marsden, who is shadow education minister, asked his question in Parliament on Monday.

Minister of State for Universities and Science, Jo Johnson, was unable to answer the question, but said: “The latest estimate of the number of EU students in England in receipt of undergraduate full and part-time fee loans is 45,000 in 2015/16.

“The government recognises the important contribution that international students make to the UK.

“Their presence brings an international outlook and diversity to campuses, benefiting students and long term UK links post-graduation.”
