New pirate-themed play area set to open for Easter break

The £67,000 project, called Pirate Cove, situated behind the café, is set to officially opened today by Fylde mayor Coun Peter Hardy, accompanied by other Fylde dignitaries.

Aimed at two- to five-year-olds, it will feature a play galleon, a sandpit with treasure chest, a wigwam, swings, a wobble board, a clatter bridge’, a springy whale, a crawl tunnel and sea-horse seesaw along with log walks, a zigzag stepper, a second play-ship, a roundabout a noughts-and-crosses panel and a pinball panel.

The work has been carried out by Cumbria-based Playdale, who have constructed a number of playgrounds across Fylde in recent years .

Coun Cheryl Little, chairman of Fylde Council’s Tourism and Leisure Committee, said: “The workmen have been very efficient and I’m really pleased that the play area will be open in time for Easter.

“Thousands of people visit Fairhaven Lake every week so I’m confident that Pirate Cove will be very popular.

“Children love this kind of equipment. We never had such exciting playgrounds when I was a child and I am confident that generations of children will enjoy many happy hours here.”

The playground opening is a further boost for Fairhaven Lake after the unveiling of a fleet of seven new Orkney fibre-glass motor boats to add to the eight current craft at the Lake.

The new craft have cost around £5,000 each and Coun Little added: “Fairhaven has always been popular with familes and I’m sure the new boats will help cement that appeal.”
