We must concentrate on hope writes Andy Mitchell

‘What a difference a day makes,” went the old Esther Phillips record. It’s only now we realise exactly what that can mean to the way we lead our lives.

Since we last chatted last Wednesday (which seems a month ago) so much has changed to the way we lead our lives. But, of course, another well known phrase is “nothing is forever”, and we must all concentrate on hope for the future and a return to normality.

Again, by the time you read this, things may have moved on yet again with even more restrictions, but for now, the bars, pubs, restaurants and everyday life is on hold. We may have to brace ourselves for even more restriction as we all battle together to fight off this demon.

“Together” of course is the keyword, and over the last few days we’ve seen some amazing evidence of caring for those who are the most vulnerable. Mothering Sunday was a “social distancing” first. Phone calls had to suffice sending love to St Annes from the other end of the coast. It’s the first time in 57 years I haven’t been with Mum on her special day (I was born on Mothers Day!), but even Lady Mitchell of South Fylde will concede she is now of “a certain age” and needs protecting from what’s going on.

I walked down the street yesterday and people were saying “Hello” and a cheery “Good Morning!” as we passed by.

Could we be seeing a re emergence of that famous British spirit that copes with anything thrown at us?

A few weeks ago we heard of the “Be Kind” campaign on social media. Is this new sense of being all in it together now breaking down a few barriers and making us all kinder and friendlier?

There’s no greater leveller than a common foe, and now we are all affected in the same way, we all have a common purpose.

That basic purpose is to protect and survive.. we do that because we are human.

Yes our favourite things are on hold for now, but it’s not forever.

Let’s look after each other. The sooner we comply and get on with it, the sooner we’ll be getting back to normal.
