Lockdown: Placing our elderly under house arrest

All this talk by the government of protecting the old from coronavirus while younger people live their lives as normal is just a smokescreen.

It seems to me the ultimate plan is to place the aged in permanent house arrest or, better still, euthanasia which would suit the government and the young very nicely.

Just think of all the mortgage free property this would release which would enable the government to sell at knock down prices. Pension and benefit savings would run into billions.

The mind boggles.

Rishi would soon get his furlough money back thus freeing the nation of debt.

As the story goes all good things come to an end and hopefully the time would come soon for Boris and his advisers to retire and be locked away.

Hitler and his henchmen had similar ideas and look where it got them.

Starting to feel unwell last Saturday, I had a Covid test last Sunday (very quick and efficient).

My results came through 22 hours after my test and I was positive. I’m thinking what are people complaining about. Shortly after, I received a text from NHS England with a link to put my details on for “track and trace”. This link didn’t work at all.

I did advise my GP that I had Covid as I’d been in the surgery last Tuesday.

He supplied me with a different link, this again didn’t work. No wonder this is spreading so rapidly as I’m sure many others must have the same problems.

As it is nearly Halloween, it should be renamed “trick or treat”.

We need safe return of our fans

Last Thursday I asked the government to allow for the safe return of fans to stadia.

Many football clubs, especially those in the football league, are suffering financial distress because of reduced match-day revenue.

Blackpool FC and football clubs across the country are the heart of local communities. Several weeks ago a number of football league clubs demonstrated that they could safely welcome back fans into stadiums. I was fortunate enough to be at Bloomfield Road to see Blackpool beat Swindon in one of those very successful pilot games.

Government is in dialogue with the football authorities, but the finances of some clubs mean that the situation is becoming increasingly urgent. We must help clubs by getting fans back in their rightful place on the terraces and allow supporters to experience the enjoyment, and heartbreak, of watching their team again.

My wife and I are blessed indeed

Emergencies like the current pandemic bring out the best and worst in people and in my family’s case it has proved to be the best.

I am 88 and my wife is 84. One neighbour ensures we get the daily paper and another does a mid week shop for anything we need. Every weekend my daughter and her husband come over from York to bring the main weekly shopping.

We consider ourselves to be blessed indeed.

We need fishing rights for UK waters

We cannot continue to allow foreign fishing fleets to plunder 80 per cent of our fish in British waters.

Britain should take back full rights to British waters and only allow foreign vessels to trawl within designated areas.

Any encroachment of this rule should see them have their boats confiscated, ensuring British fishermen could catch more fish and reduce the cost to British consumers.
