A whole month to Leg it for Lytham St Annes RNLI

Last year, the event usually held on a single Sunday morning in May was cancelled because of the Covid lockdown and then rescheduled for September, when supporters had all 30 days to tackle the sponsored run solo or with family.

Hundreds rose to the challenge and the run which has traditionally been the local RNLI’s biggest fund-raiser of the year since first taking place in 2014, smashed all previous records, with a little under £12,000 raised.

Now, the whole of next month has been set for the 2021 event – and runners, walkers, toddlers, pram pushers, dog walkers, wheelchair and mobility scooter users are invited to tackle the 3.5 mile route between the RNLI boathouses at Lytham and St Annes’ South Promenade, via Fairhaven.

A Lytham St Annes RNLI spokesman said: “The beauty of having a month to complete the challenge is that it up to you when you can fit it in to your time schedule and you can take part any time of day on any day of the week.

“We were so grateful for the wonderful amount raised last year.

“It was far more than we anticipated or hoped for and as well as helping to save lives at sea, helped us plan the best way for the event in future years.”

There is no need to register for this year’s event. All the RNLI asks is that participants take some photographs at the start and finish and share them at the Lytham St Annes RNLI Facebook, Instagram or Twitter pages to help spread the word.

Suggested amount is £10 per adult and £5 per child as that is the usual cost to enter but the RNLI says amount is entirely up to the participant.

Fancy dress is not necessary but anyone wishing to dress up to brighten the day is welcome to.

Commemorative T shirts will be available to buy at £10 each, available from mid-April.

Of the £11,875 total raised last year, £11,325 went to local branch funds, with the remainder sent going directly to RNLI headquarters at Poole in Dorset.
