Ellie-Grace Atkinson, a Year 9 pupil at Millfield Science and Performing Arts College, in Thornton Cleveleys, responded to a school challenge sent out during lockdown to create a cake based on something she has learned in her GCSE Sociology lessons.

She spent five hours making an incredible feminism- themed cake.

She then sold her cake to a family member for £10, and donated the proceeds to a local women’s refuge to help women who are victims of domestic violence.

Ellie-Grace was concerned about the increased danger to these women caused by the lockdown.

Her mum, Romanne Atkinson, says Ellie, 14, wanted to make a cake “like a mechanic or builder.”

She says: “I suggested she google cakes of this nature.

“She picked ideas from a few google images and then searched a logo which would match the feminism theme.

“Ellie-Grace used her ideas and my baking tools to create the theme and build the cake.

“She asked for a little bit of help with the placing the icing that she had rolled on to the cake as she was worried it would go wrong so I placed it on and she smoothed it all down, which she was really proud of.

“It was Ellie’s idea to sell the cake and donate the funds to a women’s refuge which I thought was so lovely.”

Ellie-Grace, who is a keen baker, says she was thrilled to take on the task.

And the forward- thinking young woman wanted to do something to help take a stand for equality.

Ellie-Grace says: “When I got the email from school tasking us to bake a cake for sociology lessons, I got really excited.

“I love baking and making models out of icing but also, to help raise awareness for the equality of men and women.

“I asked my Mum if we could advertise the cake for sale and donate the money to a local refuge charity, which we did.

“The cake was sold to my uncle and the money was donated to Fylde Coast Women’s R refuge”

Romanne says: “I’m so proud of how much Ellie put in to this task, not stopping at just baking the cake.

“She thoroughly enjoyed this, and even though she felt uncomfortable with her back after several hours, Ellie-Graceshe still carried on creating an amazing piece of work.

“Ellie-Grace has a true heart of gold, to think beyond the cake task and I’m so proud of her.”

“Ellie-Grace allowed her eight-year-old sister to help weigh some ingredients at the beginning, as her sister’s school work has been set on weights.

“Both her sisters were itching for a slice, but Ellie was determined that it was being sold and the funds to be donated.

“I’m working full- time from home, so Ellie helping her sisters with a bit of their work was a massive help to me as sadly, I’m not able to help as much as I’d like to.”
