Despite the lockdown and social distancing, organisers of Celebrate Fleetwood Day sPeople in Fleetwood are being invited to celebrate the town and a VE Day milestone this Friday in a unique event in the town’s historyay the Bank Holiday event will be a demonstration of community togetherness.

The event follows the inaugural Fleetwood Day held last year, when there was a public get-together in the Euston Gardens.

Although the pandemic has meant a similar kind of event had to be cancelled this time, organisers say people can still celebrate the local, community in a different way.

Margaret Daniels, from the event’s committee, said, “People are holding ‘stay-at-home’ street parties and decorating their houses so they can enjoy the day safely.

“It may not be how we originally planned but this is still about celebrating our town.

“It’s for our family, friends and neighbours, our fantastic health service and key workers keeping us safe and well and everyone playing their part, looking after each other.

“It’s also about celebrating our past, the people and events that form Fleetwood’s history and as it’s the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, acknowledging the sacrifice of past generations.”

At 3pm it is hoped that residents will come out to their gardens, doorsteps and windows to clap, shout, whistle and make noise to show what a strong community there is in Fleetwood.

Fleetwood Town Council, Friends of Fleetwood Museum, Healthier Fleetwood, the Town’s Rotary and Lions Clubs and Flakefleet Primary School are among the groups encouraging residents to get involved and Celebrate Fleetwood on Friday.

As part of the celebrations, Fleetwood Museum is hoping people will contribute to a future collection of items which will document the lockdown in Fleetwood.

And with that in mind, museum manager Ben Whittaker is asking people to keep hold of potential items and footage from Fleetwood Day.

He said: “It would be great if people could photograph or film their ‘clap for Fleetwood’ moment on the Friday bank holiday.

“It would form part of a collection of items which will document Fleetwood’s response to the lockdown.”

During the lockdown, Fleetwood’s community response has been impressive.

Under the banner of Fleetwood Together, organisations across the town, including the churches, have got together to ensure those most in need have received vital parcels of food and essentials.
