Plastic protest at Preston New Road fracking site

Around 40 residents and members of county environment groups came together at Preston New Road fracking site to raise awareness of plastics pollution, what can be done to reduce plastics use, and the link between fracking and plastics.

Campaign group Plastic Free Preston and two local milk suppliers using glass packaging were at the roadside near Little Plumpton. They were joined by local residents and Central Lancashire Friends of the Earth under a giant bunting of 160 plastic milk bottles – representing the average yearly household consumption.

It was part of a Save Our Land themed week of activity during the community-led United Resistance three months of protests against fracking at Cuadrilla’s site.

Dot Kelk, from Central Lancashire Friends of the Earth, said: “People may be surprised to find out that one of the by-products of shale gas is used to produce plastic. Ethane, a hydrocarbon found in natural gas, is a key raw material for plastics.”
