Police warning on dog thefts

Officers in Fylde issued the alert through social media following an attempt to take a dog from the garden of a home near Warton.

Three other offences have been reported in the Blackpool area.

And the public are being reminded not to leave their pets vulnerable.

In every case the would-be thieves attempted to capture the dogs with a hook or loop over a fence or gate.

Sergeant Rob Conolly-Perch said the alert was a preventative measure and made clear dog owners should not be too alarmed.

He said: “There is no spate of crimes.

“This is simply a preventative message aimed at protecting dogs and their owners.

“We know how much people love their pets and we do not want them to become victims of crime.

“The crime reports show no specific breed is being targeted and there is no specific area in which these incident have occured.

“There is no pattern and no indication what those responsible intend to do with the dogs.”

Sgt Conolly-Perch said owners could take simple steps to protect their pets.

He said: “I understand people work and it isn’t always easy.”
“But try not to leave your dog unattended for too long.”

In at least one of the reported incidents the thieves were interrupted by the dog’s owner before they could complete the snatch, emphasising the importance of keeping dogs supervised while outside.

Sgt Conolly-Perch suggested a van might have been used in at least one of the reported incidents.

He called on anyone who might have information on attempted dog thefts to come forward.
