From July 27, Layton, Moor Park and Palatine libraries will be open on Mondays (10am-4pm), Fridays (10am to 4pm) and Saturdays (10am to 1pm).

This is part of a phased approach to re-opening Blackpool’s libraries, while the council says it will reopen the remaining libraries and extend opening hours as soon as it is safe to do so.

As with many other venues, there will be reduced visitor capacity and customers will only be allowed to spend a limited time on computers. There will also be mandatory hand sanitising upon entry and exit and protective screens will be in place at counters and around computer terminals. There will be no access to public toilets.

Additional cleaning measures have also been put into place to prepare the libraries for re-opening.

Upon arrival, customers will also be asked to provide contact details to assist with the Government’s Test and Trace programme. This information will be shared with NHS Test and Trace where requested, to identify people who may have been exposed to COVID-19.

Since the closure of Blackpool’s libraries on 20 March, the Library Service has been concentrating on its virtual offer and digital resources.

The At Home Library Service, which reaches vulnerable, housebound residents, was re-introduced in a reduced and modified way on 21 May, and the Libraries team have been working hard behind the scenes to maintain and review other aspects of the service. A number of virtual services and digital resources will still be available following the re-opening of libraries, including a full programme of engagement and learning activities.

Coun Maria Kirkland, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion & Leisure, said: “We know how much our residents value visiting our library buildings. We are also conscious that many people don’t have the necessary means of accessing virtual services from home. The libraries team has been working hard to get each location back open so that we can better meet the needs of our communities during this difficult time.

“We are taking small steps to ensure the safety of everyone involved, and we ask anyone visiting our libraries from 27 July to familiarise themselves with the guidance in place, as well as the latest advice on social distancing and hygiene.”
