Port's youngsters take top spot at event with rousing choral effort

Pupils from Shakespeare Primary School sang their way to first place in the Lancashire heats of the Last Choir Standing competition '“ closely followed by Kirkham Grammar School.

Shakespeare Primary School, which took part in the first of the heats at the town’s Marine Hall, beat six other choirs to achieve the coveted prize in a very close competition.

They will receive an award of £250 to buy musical equipment for their school.

In addition, they also picked up a new prize for this year, ‘Most Artistic’. Taking their total prize money to £375.

The Hall erupted with shouts and cheers as Duncan Heather (acclaimed international vocalist) made the announcement to more than 600 people.

Shakespeare’s choir consists of 31 vocalists and is led by Joanna Newson, who has been working with the choir since September 2015.

After receiving the award, Susan Bartlett, headteacher at Shakespeare Primary School, said: “We are delighted to have won and made it to the final.

“The competition has really brought out the very best in our children and they are over the moon to be performing in the final.”

Competition judge, Martin Westhorp said: “The standard of all the choirs performing here today was exceptionally high.

“It is a testament to the choir leaders who form and tutor these wonderful singing groups and without whom these choirs would not reach such a high standard.”

Lead supporter and organiser, True Bearing Chartered Financial Planners chairman, George Critchley said: “These groups show the potential singing can release in us all, the confidence it provides and the sheer enjoyment it brings to all ages.”

Kirkham Grammar Junior School were heat runner-up and will join Shakespeare Primary at the Grand Final on June 17 at King George’s Hall, Blackburn.
