Plans for this were explained to hoteliers, with a dazzling example of what can be achieved with ‘digital mapping’.

The projection method was seen by millions in 2012 for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee party when Buckingham Palace was turned into a terrace street for a performance by Our House band Madness.

The CCF cash will see a similar display created for the front of the Blackpool Tower building.

Ambitions are high for what can be created on the famous building, and tenders are being sought for the equipment and creative side of the scheme.

Mr Welsh showcased the potential for The Tower with a Christmas display seen on department store Saks Fifth Avenue – where present boxes are wrapped in luxurious-looking ribbon, skaters swirl on a seven-storey vertical ice rink and a giant yeti ‘scatters’ snow.

Mr Welsh added that ideas for The Tower display were open to creative tender, but elements could be designed to enhance the annual fireworks competition as well as the Illuminations’ offering.

“The possibilities are endless once we have the technology in place,” he said.

“The challenge is how much we can do in the time scale for this year.”
