A major road into Blackpool and St Annes has been re-opened after an accident involving two cars.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the scene at around 10.40am on Wednesday.

It is not yet clear how many people were in the vehicles or the extent of any injuries.

But police closed the road at around 11am. It is believed there has been a fuel leak on the carriageway.

Fire crews were called because of smoke coming from one of the vehicles.

The incident has sparked major traffic tailbacks around the area, with vehicles diverting via Highbury Road East on to Clifton Drive South.

By noon, traffic had also backed up severely on Squires Gate Lane.

The delays have been exacerbated by the continued closure of Wild Lane which links Ansdell and Marton.

The road re-opened around noon.
