Dr Sakthi Karunanithi, Lancashire County Council’s director of public health, said: “Around 20 per cent of Lancashire’s population smokes.

“This is a major factor that leads to health inequalities across the county.

“As well as shortening life expectancy, smoking causes conditions such as cancer, lung and heart disease, which can lead to many years of poor health.

“A third of smokers want to quit and they’re much more likely to succeed with the support of services such as Quit Squad. “

Julie Trezise, Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s stop smoking service manager, said: “Our emphasis is on providing a community focus by changing people’s behaviour and promoting smoke-free homes.”

“You’re four times more likely to stop with expert help and advice.”
