In the first, Lytham and Blackpool Coastguard said they were called to "persons making threats to police" to enter the sea at Blackpool at around 3.20am today.

One was found and detained by resort police officers in a sleeping bag on the Tower Festival Headland, while the other was spotted waist deep in the water by North Pier by volunteers from the RNLI lifeboat station, who "assisted in getting him out of the water," a spokesman said.

That person was brought ashore in a lifeboat and also detained by police.

Fleetwood Coastguard was also called out.

Then, the RNLI said rescuers were called out for a second time at 4.40am, when somebody was reported in the sea near Central Pier, though there was "no cause for concern found."
