The 1970s chart-toppers headline a glittering afternoon of entertainment ahead of the big ceremony, set to take place at 5.30pm on a stage in the town’s Piazza.

Among the acts to provide entertainment are Lytham Academy of Theatre Arts, with an excerpt from their forthcoming Lowther Pavilion show Rock of Ages, plus Rarity School of Dance and Drama, the Soul Convicts and the Deadbeats.

The fun starts from 2pm and Denize Ashton, chairman of the Lytham Business Partnership, said: “This is the highlight of winter in Lytham and rounds off nicely what has been a epic year of festivals, club days and other major events.

“Our aim as ever is to make Lytham a destination for locals and visitors to enjoy, and they have been here in their thousands in 2016.

“The Bay City Rollers are another brilliant coup for the Lytham Lights Switch On Event and it will be an afternoon not to miss.

“The line up of acts provides something for every age group and the headliners will make a lot of ladies very happy and give the younger audience a real taste of the 70s.

“We are also very excited to be working, for the first time, with Lightpool from Blackpool Illuminations and hope this be the start of a great collaboration.

“A huge thank you to the Lytham Christmas team for all their hard, largely unseen, work and Cuffe and Taylor for providing the entertainment – the town will really be rocking. Thanks also to the supportive Lytham businesses that contribute year on year to Light Up Lytham.”

The Bay City Rollers, who featured in the Lytham Festival in August and play Blackpool’s Winter Gardens on December 16, were major teen idols in the 1970s with a string of hits such as Shangalang and Bye Bye Baby. They chalked up 10 UK top 10 singles and four UK top 10 albums – and Express readers have the chance to earn discounts on tickets for their December Blackpool concert.

Just take along a copy of this week’s paper to the Lytham Assembly Rooms – round the corner from the switch-on-stage – between 2 and 6pm on Saturday to find out more.
