Scouting Snapshots

The Scout section of the 7th Blackpool Scout Group visited the Fire and Rescue Service at their base at Forest Gate, North Park Drive, Blackpool.

Prior to the visit the Scouts aged between 10.5 and 14, had been asked to research, and look at the badge requirements for the Fire Safety Badge.

They firefighters of Green Watch and went through step by step of the badge requirements, with the emphasis on prevention.

The badge requires the scouts to understand camp fires, heath and moorland fires, the different sorts of fire extinguishers, safety on the home, smoke detectors, and furniture, and cloth.

A firefighter then led a question and answer session for over 45 minutes, with some very intelligent questions coming from all the Scouts.

Once the theory session was over, it was action!

All of the Scout troop had the chance to have a closer look ay the engines, breathing apparatus, and of course have a go at the hose.

A big thank you to the firefighters and the rest of the Fire and Rescue Service of Forest Gate for giving their valuable time to 7th Blackpool Scouts and Leaders.

The Scout group meets on Monday evening at Baines Endowed School, Penrose Avenue, South Shore.

Times for the different sections are as follows: Scouts from 7.30pm - 9.15pm, Cubs 7pm - 8.15pm and Beavers 6pm - 7pm.

Cubs outwit each other at chess

Eighteen young future Masters representing 10 packs from Blackpool District Cubs Section battled it out in the art of chess.

Using their skills and brains, they tried to outwit their opponents.

The Cubs aged between eight and 10.5 met at the 1st Norbreck Scout and Guide HQ, under the watchful eye of Brian Paley, District Scout team administrator, and supported by Bill Winters, former teacher, and member of Poulton Chess Club.

In First place was William Swift of the 8/36th, Second Alfie Charlton 45th, Third, Nathan Parson 45th, Fourth, Matthew Corsbie 1st Norbreck, and Fifth, Michael Cassidy 1st Bispham.

Splashing time at district swim gala

The District held their Annual Swimming Gala at the Palatine Leisure Centre last Wednesday.

Parents and supporters turned up to cheer on their youngsters and groups.

Over 120 Beavers and Cub Scouts, 12 colonies and 14 Cub packs were involved.

The competition is split into two halves according to age.

From fun events to width and length races, along with relays this event gives every child who can swim or leaning to swim the opportunity to take part in the gala.

It is supervised throughout by the Life Guards of Blackpool Borough Council, and, Leaders of the District Scout Council.

The evening was attended by the District Commissioner for Blackpool Scouts Victoria da Silva MBE
