Stage set for new era at Lowther

A fund-raising drive is being stepped up as work gets under way on the first phase of improvements to Lytham's theatre.

Lowther Pavilion closed on Monday to allow for the installation of a new seating system, while new roofing is also being fitted over the barrel section of the building and restoration work being carried out to its central lantern.

While the last of the outdoor family plays season in the adjacent Lowther Gardens takes place next Wednesday, the first production following the installation of the new seats will be the play Ball of Fire, about former Blackpool and England footballer Alan Ball, on September 8.

The new seating will feature much more raking and the opportunity to buy a seat and have your name engraved on the back is still available under the Love Lowther fund-raising scheme.

While the current work is covered by a £123,000 grant from Fylde Council and private donations, the whole project is set to cost more than £5m and the Love Lowther scheme has generated more than £150,000 so far as Lowther officials look to generate as much cash as possible towards the future phases of the refurbishment.

To help boost the fund further, a Love Lowther 500 Club has been launched, in which a subscription of £5 a month offers the opportunity of supporting the Lowther redevelopment as well as being entered into a monthly cash draw.

Half the money generated will go in prizes with the draw taking place on the third Thursday of every month in the Lowther café, starting on September 15,.

Lowther Trust chairman Tim Lince said: “This is a very exciting time for us all. Seeing the builders arrive on site has been a great boost and is now the start of our next journey along the road to provide the Fylde region with an Iconic arts facility that is warm, friendly, inviting and provides first class entertainment and theatre for the whole family.”
