STORE wars are set to break out in St Annes in the New Year.
German retailer Aldi has pledged to start work on its long-awaited store in the spring - ahead of a 2013 opening.
And strong rumours are circulating that Marks&Spencer are seeking to move from their current site below the Travelodge budget hotel into bigger and better premises - if they can be found.
Aldi will submit a new application to the council next month.
It is likely to kickstart the stalled development at the derelict former St Annes Conservative Club (pictured) on the corner site in Clifton Drive North, and the adjoining St Anthony’s House, the former Job Centre on St George‘s Road.
Aldi originally submitted plans for a four-storey building comprising the new store, a new Conservative Club, 34 apartments and a basement car park in 2008. But when the recession hit the retailer could not find a development partner. In the past three year the two buildings have become empty eyesores.
Now Aldi has revealed it has found a partner and is ready move forward with the scheme.
