Teens help tots in Nepalese schools

A dedicated team of teenage tutors travelled thousands of miles to help child victims of the deadly Nepal earthquake.

The 13 students from Blackpool Sixth Form College touched down in Nepal after a year of fundraising for children in the country to be given top-quality education following the tragic earthquake in April last year, which left more than 8,000 people dead.

The teens took on a placement at Shubakabana Academy in Kiritipur where they were greeted by a welcoming assembly of eight to 13-year-olds, who gave them a special tikka blessing – a religious symbol painted on the forehead to represent strength of self.

The students then taught lessons in a range of subjects including space and the solar system, construction work, healthcare and first aid, and story telling.

The team also experienced first-hand traditional Nepalese culture, travelling to Durbar Square to meet the Kumari - a Hindu ‘living goddess’ worshipped as a manifestation of divine energy.

They also visited Boudnath - the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal - to meet with Tibetan monks and observe their meditation before taking on the 365 steps to enlightenment at Swayambunath.

They will return to the UK by the end of the month.

A Blackpool Sixth Form College spokesman said: “Students gained a real feel for the old city and witnessed some of the devastating effects of the earthquake.
