Tide of booze seized in police crackdown

Officers believe the problem of youth drinking is particularly an issue in Kirkham and Wesham, with most alcohol seizures taking place in local parks and open spaces.

Police said they are regularly confiscating drink from youngsters as young as 12.

Now, in a bid to tackle the issue, Kirkham neighbourhood policing team has launched extra high-visibility patrols at peak weekend and evening times. Fylde Insp Keith Ogle is also urging parents to make sure they know where the alcohol they are buying is going – and to keep it out of reach of teenagers.

He said: “We have been working really hard with local licensees and off licences to make sure no underage teenagers are being served.

“I am glad to say that during the last test purchasing operation not one licensed facility failed and during the recent gala days we also saw no issues arising. I think many of these young people are getting the alcohol from home. Supermarkets are selling alcohol cheaper than ever before and parents are stocking up with the good weather.

“I would ask all parents to keep an eye on their alcohol supplies and where possible keep it out of reach.

“Our message is clear - if you are under 18 and found with alcohol you will have it confiscated.

“Most of the teens we come across expect it now.”
