Mr Maynard, who said he had voted to leave Europe at the referendum, said: “Throughout the referendum debate I think his comments and views on how we leave the EU have shown a degree of common sense and practicality, and that is what we now need even more.

“We need to understand how best that can be achieved.

“I think we have reached a point where if you are leave or remain, the national voice has been heard and we now need to act in a way that ensures everyone feels included in the process.”

Fylde Tory MP Mark Menzies said he had yet to decide which of the five candidates, who also include Theresa May, Michael Gove, Stephen Crabb and Andrea Leadsom, to back.

He said: “It has been a really uncertain week for the Government, particularly in losing such a strong Prime Minister who has steered Britain through one of the most tumultuous economic periods in recent history.

“I have yet to decide who I will be voting for but will listen to all the nominees in the coming days and make my decision based on who I think will do the best job for Britain and Fylde.”
