St Annes Music and Arts Festival gets off to a flying start on Saturday – with an event offering a tantalising taste of what is to come seven days later.

The town’s library is the venue for a free family drop-in art session entitled Let’s Go Fly A Kite.

Taking place between 10am and 3pm, open to all ages and sponsored by the Fylde Decorative and Fine Arts Society, it offers the opportunity to make and decorate kites in advance of the St Annes Kite Festival, which coincides with the final weekend of the nine-day Music and Arts Festival.

Materials and guidance will be provided and the kites can either be taken home or will be used to decorate the library and returned to their owners later.

There is also Bright and Breezy drop-in visual arts activity for all ages at the library the same day, while the same venue hosts an exhibition of work by St Annes Arts Circle for the duration of the festival through until July 26.

Saturday is also the opening of an art and photography exhibition which will run for the festival’s full nine days at the Mooch 1 shop in Garden Street, while on Saturday evening, Switched On Swing perform in concert at the Palace buildings.

With pavement art activity for all ages at Ashton Gardens Pavilion cafe on Sunday from 10am and music to follow in the afternoon, festival organiser Barbara Mackenzie is looking forward to the event getting of to a dazzling start and promises something for everyone throughout.

On Tuesday, Ashton Gardens Pavilion will host an evening with author Rosie Garland, while on Wednesday, there is a free afternoon of poetry and music with Live Poets and Poetry People, also at the Pavilion.

From next Thursday through until the end of the festival on Sunday July 26, there will be an exhibition about the history of St Annes at the Palace buildings and see next week’s Express for more details of events over the events’ second weekend.

“The intention has been to offer as wide a range of events as possible and we hope everyone enjoys themselves,” said Barbara.
