UPDATE: Man, 78, killed in '˜serious accident' on main road

A man has died following a serious crash on the main route between Blackpool and Preston, police have confirmed.

The collision happened at around 9.40am on the A583, close to the junction of Blackpool Road and Kirkham Road.

Two vehicles – a Honda Civic and Kia Picanto – were involved.

The 78-year-old driver of the Kia - who police said was from the Fylde coast - was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 75-year-old man, who had been at the wheel of the Honda, was taken to Royal Preston Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Police spent nearly six hours clearing the scene and carrying out investigation work and are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Adam Dawson of Lancashire’s Road Policing Unit said: “This is a tragic incident where a man has sadly lost his life and my thoughts remain with his loved ones at this time.

“An investigation to establish exactly how this collision came to occur is already underway and I would urge anyone who witnessed what happened to contact us.”

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting log 334 of June 20.

Firefighters from South Shore and Fulwood both attended the accident scene.

The North West Air Ambulance was scrambled but stood down en-route.

The road re-opened at around 3.30pm.
