It’s free and open to all and will include an exhibition on the Battle of the Somme and life in 1916 created by Warton residents along with a wide array of activities and refreshments from the period.

From the start of the event at 10am, a ‘Tommy’ from the trenches will be on duty to show off his uniform, his First World War soldier’s kit, his box of real items from the war and to tell stories.

There will be the opportunity to help make a giant poppy, to pet and ride two ‘ambulance’ donkeys, take a close look at a special banner made by pupils of St Paul’s School and a flag by those from Holy Family School and from 2pm, a children’s parade in 1916 clothes, with prizes for the winners.

A football tournament for youngsters run by AFC Fylde Community Foundation will take place at Bridges Playing Fields all day while proceedings will be rounded off with the Last Post at about 4pm with RAF cadets, a ladies’ singing group, a visit from Fylde MP Mark Menzies and a flag lowering ceremony in tribute to the fallen of the village.

“We hope plenty of people will come along to help us honour our brave lads,” said parish councillor Susan Parkin.
