Woman dies after crash on busy Fylde road

An elderly woman has died after her car hit a brick wall in St Annes.

The 78-year-old was yesterday taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital with “serious” injuries following the collision at the junction of Blackpool Road North and Heyhouses Lane but later died.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene at around 12,10pm and the road was closed for around three hours. An air ambulance and fire crews also attended.

It is thought the woman, who was driving a silver Honda Jazz, travelled across the junction and the car hit a brick wall.

Sgt Claire Pearson, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident and my thoughts remain with the family and friends of the woman who are being supported by specially trained officers at this difficult time.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the collision and may have seen what happened to contact us.”

A resident on Blackpool Road North, who asked not to be named, said: “I was just sitting in my living room and heard an almighty bang.

“It was very scary to hear as you knew something terrible must have happened.

“When I went to look out on the road, a lot of people were panicking as you could tell it was a very serious accident.”
