Work of gardening legend in spotlight

On Wednesday, March 16, the historic country house will be the venue for a full day of talks and tours of interest to anyone interested in garden history.

Keynote speaker is Dr David Jacques, author of Georgian Gardens: The Reign of Nature, who will talk about ‘Lancelot Brown, Gardener to His Majesty at Hampton Court’ in the morning.

The day is organised by the Lancashire Gardens Trust in association with Heritage Trust for the North West (HTNW), the charity which manages Lytham Hall.

John Miller, chief executive of HTNW, said: “There are not many gardens in Lancashire that had any direct work done by Capability Brown.

“The west side of the country was less well developed than the east side, where Capability Brown was involved in a lot of gardens, but his ideas inspired many regional garden designers.

“Dr Jacques is a real expert on Capability Brown and we are delighted he has agreed to be our keynote speaker.”

The keynote lecture will be followed by a buffet lunch in the Hall’s dining room, while in the afternoon guests will be able to follow two different talks and tours focusing on trees, land reclamation, history of the Clifton family, long-time residents of the Hall, or other topics of interest.

The Capability Brown Festival in the North West will run through 2016 with a variety of speakers at different venues, as organised by the Lancashire Gardens Trust.
