LIFT your voice for Lytham in 2012!

Here is your chance to be part of an ambitious bid to set up a Lytham Community Choir.

It is open to absolutely anyone who lives or works in the town and, thanks to a generous offer already made by the promoters of Lytham Proms, the choir could be part of the accompanying bill for tenor Alfie Boe on Lytham Green next August.

It is hoped that the choir will also perform at other key events in Lytham throughout 2012, such as officially opening the Park View 4U amphitheatre in the spring as well as welcoming the Olympic Torch in advance of Lytham Club Day in June before finishing off the year with a carol concert.

The idea of the town choir came about after Cath Powell, community development manager of the Park View 4U play area development, watched the TV programme Unsung Town.

That featured the development of a choir from scratch in the Watford suburb of South Oxhey by specialist choirmaster Gareth Malone, who has featured on several series of similar programmes on the BBC.

“I was watching it thinking we could easily do something similar in Lytham, then after putting a comment on Facebook and getting a positive response, I decided to go for it,” said Cath, who was awarded the MBE earlier this year for her services to the community.

“Everyone I meet either wants to be involved or is offering their support. It is something that every age group can take part in and a lovely way to bring the community together.

“I was so excited when Peter agreed to let us perform at the Proms. I can’t thank him enough, it’s amazing.”

Mr Taylor said: “We are delighted that Lytham is putting together a community choir. It all sounds very exciting and a great way of bringing the community together. We look forward to hearing them perform, and if all goes well allowing them to perform a spot in the Lytham Proms 2012 Festival Weekend. We wish them the best of luck - I’m sure they will have lots of fun!”

It is hoped the choir will form early in the New Year and anyone wanting to join can register at or leave contact details at the Post Office or Crofts Newsagents in Warton Street or at Lytham Funeral Service.
