Cardle's quest to be Peker wrecker in Glasgow

And though the contest will only take place over six rounds with no belt at stake, the Lytham boxer says he will treat it as though there is.

Cardle said: “It is a tick-over fight, a warm-up for my British title fight against Kevin Hooper, but I will be treating it as seriously as if it is for the British title.”

It should be a straightforward night for the 25-year-old against an opponent from Marseille with a modest record.

Peker has had 22 fights, eight of them wins, 12 defeats and a couple of draws.

Most of his fights have been in his home country.

Peker’s sole previous foray in this country was against Michael Roberts, also in Glasgow in March, 2014. Roberts won on points.

Cardle will be back in the ring only eight weeks after his technical draw against Sean Dodd at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, a result which was enough for him to retain his British title.

Looking forward to Glasgow, Cardle said: “I have been training just as hard as I would if there was a title at stake.

“I would like to have fought Hooper on Saturday in 
Glasgow but that didn’t happen.

“Hooper and his people said it was too short notice and they needed longer to prepare.

“I am taking this fight against Peker because I 
want to keep busy and keep in tune.

“It gets me out in the ring and obviously there is the attraction of fighting in Glasgow, where I am hoping to build a following.”

Cardle says he does not know at this stage when he will meet Grimsby boxer Hooper for the third defence of his lightweight belt.

“The British Boxing Board Of Control have said that the fight has to take place before the end of August.

Cardle said: “There was some talk of being on the Anthony Joshua promotion in June, but that bill is full.

“I might get on the Kell Brook promotion in July, but whenever it turns out to be I know I will be ready.”
