The fight was stopped 55 seconds from the end of round two at London’s O2 Arena, with the 28-year-old reeling under ferocious attack from the champion from Tyneside.

Cardle, who held the British belt for close to two years, has now lost two title fights in 12 months.

He said: “I have to take it and move on. I’m not done and I’m still destined for big things. I’m not scared of anyone and I’ll fight anyone.

“Lewis is a great champion, who flew under the radar for so long but his last two fights have been incredible and everyone has been right to rave about him.

“I picked up on a few flaws and weaknesses but he is a tough, tough man, who can take a lot of punishment as he showed in that first round.

“We were trading shots and I came out for the second round to do the same but he caught me with a few good shots.

“I’ll regroup and have a holiday with my girlfriend. My last holiday was at New Year, when I got the call about Lewis and was straight into the gym. So I’ll have some quality time and come back a different animal.”
