It was a day for defenders with just two shots on target in the whole game, not that Neil McDonald will care.

The win moves Blackpool five points clear of neighbours Fleetwood who occupy the fourth League One relegation spot at present, after their last-gasp defeat at Bradford.

At Bloomfield Road it was a tough afternoon for both sides in wintry conditions in a game of few chances.

Blackpool got the breakthrough in first half-stoppage time when Redshaw kept his nerve to fire home from 12 yards after Brad Potts was fouled in the area.

After the break Pool looked much more of a threat in attack, but it was the back four who caught the eye.

Tom Aldred and Will Aimson in particular were superb, preventing Gillingham from having a single effort on goal.
