Head coach Critchley said: “Ollie was outstanding as captain. He’s played right-back, centre-half and in midfield for us, and I thought he was excellent. He’s a great person to have around and leads by example.

“The likes of Luke Garbutt, Keshi Anderson and even Matty Virtue all had to lead on Tuesday and show the younger players what it means to play in these games.”

For Virtue, this was his first game since August, while MJ Williams also returned after injury.

Both played 45 minutes and Critchley added: “Matty and Jordan played to the speed of the game. It can take a while for players to hit the ground running but I thought they both did that.

“It’s good to have them both back and hopefully they can build on that.

“They have to fight to get back in the team and there are players in their positions in good form but that’s the competition you want.”
