Fleetwood boss wants more goals from hero Nirennold

Nirennold’s 52nd-minute header cancelled out keeper Chris Neal’s early own goal at Northampton, where Rosler’s reign began with a 1-1 draw.

It is the 6ft 4in Frenchman’s first goal since joining Town from Miami City 12 months ago.

The midfielder was used mainly as a full-back to ease Fleetwood’s defensive injury problems last season but some cameo appearances in his preferred role helped Town beat the drop in the League One run-in.

Nirennold was given the nod to start on the left of a midfield three at Sixfields, alongside Eggert Jonsson and Jimmy Ryan.

Town struggled for goals from midfield last season and Rosler wants his midfielders to burst forward.

He said: “I’m happy for Victor. Hopefully that goal will give him more belief.

“Straight after the goal he had another chance and we need to be playing that sort of football.

“We need midfielders who believe they can score and are bombing into the box. We know Bobby Grant can do it but we also need it from Victor.”

Grant, last season’s top scorer, started in a front three but moved into a deeper role in the second half.

Rosler was pleased with his side’s performance and added: “I think it is a fair result. We started reasonably well and from the first shot on goal they scored.

“It was a little bit of a blow for us. We needed a few minutes to adapt to that situation, but the longer the game went on we started to pass and had some very good counter-attacks and transition play.

“We had some good opportunities in and around the box without having a clear-cut chance.

“But in the second half we adjusted one or two things and all credit to the boys. They were 1-0 down in very hot conditions but started to dominate the game.

“We had more possession than they did and more shots on target. Overall I think it is a fair point for both teams.

“I can’t be disappointed about anything. I only had three proper training sessions.

“The players showed me a lot in the week and on Saturday, and I can only be pleased that we ground out that result.

“I think Northampton will be a threat, especially at home. They have a lot of experience and know how to play a certain way. They will cause a lot of teams problems.”

And Rosler was especially pleased with the opening 25 minutes of the second half. He said: “All credit to my players for getting on the ball and creating chances. I think Northampton struggled in that period.”

That hosts hit back and Rosler added: “In the last minutes we got sucked into their game. That can happen to a young team like we are, though I think we still had enough energy to pass that ball.

“They looked very dangerous playing percentage football, creating a lot of throw-ins and free-kicks, and that is always a threat here.”
