The experienced defender is expected to join a rival National League North side.

Holmes, who made over 150 appearances during four years at Tranmere, joined the Coasters in the summer after leaving Newport County.

The 27-year-old had been a regular in the starting line-up this season but was absent from the squad for the last two games against Stalybridge Celtic and Darwen.

Coasters boss Dave Challinor is short on cover at right-back after Caspar Hughes picked up a knock last weekend and the manager has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his defensive options.

The Coasters travel to Darlington this weekend for a clash of the top-two knowing that victory would open up a seven-point gap between the clubs .

Having inflicted Fylde’s first league defeat of the season, Tamworth beat Darlington 2-1 last weekend while the Coasters were bouncing back with a 5-0 rout of Stalybridge.
