New world record for Woods in half-marathon
St Annes' Shelly Woods gave her Rio 2016 Paralympic hopes a massive boost as she broke the women's wheelchair half-marathon world record in Portugal.
The triple Paralympic medalist won in 49.49 at the Lisbon Half-Marathon, beating fellow Brit Jade Jones by one second.
Woods tweeted: “Great racing today, really happy to have won in a new world record time 49.49 #personalbest.”
The 29-year-old will now be looking ahead to next month’s London Marathon, which she won in 2007, in her bid to represent GB in a third Paralympics in Brazil.
Before flying out to Portugal, Woods visited Aspire Academy and Highfurlong School last week to address pupils.
