Planning for a return to action has been hit by the latest lockdown and the RFU’s decision to scrap the league season at all levels below the Championship.

However, Spragg stressed that all the hard work at the club is continuing.

He told BBC Radio Lancashire: “There have been big changes at the club over the past few months with Mike Brennand coming in as chairman and Dave Young stepping into the role of director of rugby, which is great for us.

“He and Dave Wiseman have worked incredibly hard over lockdown, making big decisions to try to protect the club.

“There have been redundancies in the club and we had to take reductions in payments as coaching staff and spent some time unpaid to do the right thing for the club.

“There have been no payments of players but that doesn’t mean you break even – it costs money just to turn the floodlights on for training.

“When bars reopened it seemed positive but that isn’t a big earner for the club.

“We’ve worked hard on sponsorship and it looks like we’ve done a good job in terms of bringing in sponsors for this season.

“But we need some sort of season to be able to put a sponsor on a playing shirt for sponsors to get their money’s worth.”

Progress has been hit by the latest lockdown but Spragg stresses the work must continue.

The head coach added: “A lot of people are working very hard but things are now getting shut down and barriers put up.

“Everyone is just trying to work through the uncertainty to make sure there’s something exciting and stable to come back to.”
