Watch these Puppinis sing in the Changes

The talented trio were already established when Michael Buble asked them to support some of his tracks – but that lucky break saw their retro style of close harmony win even more fans.

The three ‘sisters’ – Kate Mullins, Marcella Puppini and Emma Smith – are now set to ring the changes at Lytham’s Lowther Pavilion on Friday.

Locals will get a preview of tracks on the Puppini’s fifth album The Highlife – produced on the back of a crowdfunding appeal to give them more control, after four previous albums on the Universal label.

The new record, out on Friday, March 11, spans Cyndi Lauper, Mary Poppins, classic swing, Rappers Delight – and Sia. It also includes a cover of the late David Bowie’s Changes – by coincidence rather than design. Puppini Sister Kate Mullins explains: “Marcella has wanted to do Bowie’s Changes for a long time. We recorded it last year while working on the album.”

While key influences come from days gone by, revisiting the sounds of the Andrews Sisters with songs such as Accentuate The Positive on Highlife, the girls are keen observers of contemporary pop too.

“We wanted to be fully in control,” Kate says of the courageous decision to crowdfund the latest album. “It’s our best yet. I know everyone would say that, but it is true.

“We have gone back to the beginning, with old songs done in a new style, new done old, some classic Puppini mash-ups and a couple of originals.

“Because the material is so new and fresh, it will be great to perform it for everyone.”

The album is the first to feature Emma Smith, although she’s been with Kate and Marcella since 2012.

“Emma has taken the band to a whole other level,” adds Kate. “It shows on stage and in the new album. It’s unlikely a band would go on for 12 years without changes and a new lease of life is good.”
